About This Site
Mancalaboardgame.com exists because of a gap that seemed silly to leave open: mancala is one of the most-searched board games on the internet, and the top results for playing it were ad-walled game portals, while the top results for its rules were scanned PDFs. A game this good deserved one fast place that does both properly.
What this site is
First, a game. The mancala on the homepage is free, loads in a couple of seconds, and runs with no ads, no account, and no interruptions of any kind: pass-and-play, a computer opponent at three levels, and Avalanche mode for the GamePigeon crowd.
Second, a reference. The content here covers the rules with engine-rendered board diagrams, strategy grounded in the analysis that solved the game, the family of variants from Ghana to the Philippines, and a history that treats evidence as non-optional.
The accuracy bar
Two commitments shape every page. The rules content is verified against this site’s own game engine: every board diagram on the site is rendered and checked by the same code that runs the game, so a position you see in an article is a position that can legally occur. And factual claims are checked against cited sources; where the record is thin or disputed, the pages say so instead of rounding up. That’s why you won’t read here that pharaohs played mancala 7,000 years ago. The honest version of this game’s story is impressive enough.
Found a rules edge case that looks wrong, a fact that needs a better source, or a bug in the game? Email info@mancalaboardgame.com. Corrections genuinely welcome; the site’s only real asset is being right.
Who’s behind it
This is an indie project by Tim, a web developer who builds small, fast, single-purpose sites, and who lost enough games of mancala to a nine-year-old relative to take the strategy research personally. More of his work is at timmyships.com.
No ads means the site currently makes nothing, which is fine; it’s cheap to run. If that ever changes, it’ll be through clearly labeled affiliate links on board-buying content, never through ads on the game or dressed-up sponsorships in the reference pages.
More games from Tim
Same idea, different board. If you like a clean, ad-free game that loads fast and gets out of the way, here are a few others from the same workshop:
- 2 Player Chess: pass-and-play or take on the computer.
- Checkers Online: the classic, free in your browser.
- Draughts Online: English draughts against the computer or a friend.
- Dama Game Online: the regional draughts family, playable online.
- Play Go Online: the ancient game of surrounding territory.
